月升 Moonrise (2018), Single-Channel Video (b&w, no sound), 4'37"
The Snake Mountain is a limestone peak on the northern outskirts of Kunming, my hometown. The jagged white rocky ridge can be seen from most areas of the city. On a winter night, I stood on a rock on the top of the Snake Mountain for over one hundred minutes, while the moon was gradually rising and finally disappeared outside the frame. In accelerated time, movements that are normally imperceptible take on new forms: the trajectory of the moon crosses the sky, airplanes streak like meteors, and city lights burst like fireworks. And what is normally in motion is now frozen: the body remains still in the wind, silent as a rock.
