在长期项目< 东岛博物志> 中,策划者程新皓试图以研究式的艺术回应晚清博物学家和永玉(1839 ~ 1911) 所提出的问题。和永玉生活的年代恰好处于西学东渐而中国文脉依然存续的窗口期。他作为两种传统的熟习者,试图各采其长而创造出自己的博物学分类体系,并以此为基础,对东海上的无名海岛进行了考察和标本采集,最终写成了名为< 东岛博物志> 的奇书。程新皓发起的艺术项目就是对这座岛屿进行的再调查。他召集了学者和艺术家朋友们,以文字、录像、装置、摄影等多种媒介围绕着东岛进行了各自的创作并将之进行共置。这个项目试图从当代知识制造的角度,重新回应在和永玉在< 东岛博物志> 中所蕴含的超越于东方- 西方两种传统之外的新分类的可能性。

In his long-term project "Nature History of the Eastern Island", Xinhao Cheng wants to answer the issue from the Ho Yung-yu, who was an naturalist in Qing dynasty. It was the time that the European knowledge came into China, and Chinese tradition still continued. As a learner of both traditions, Ho tried to created his own classification system to name and structure the world. Based on it, he made his journey to the Eastern Island and collected specimens, and finally wrote the book " Nature History of the Eastern Island ". Cheng Xinhao launched a re-investigation on this island and also on Ho's legendary trip. He assembled his artists friends and made films, installations, sculptures and pictures. These works are new studies on the construction of knowledge.
